EMAIL CORESS between me and RIBA North West
DETAILS ON SETTING UP YOUR LOGBOOK
Alison Mackinder
I'm at the MSA, I was told in a lecture that we had the option of going through our University, or through 'riba' maybe I am not very clued up on the matter but I recall one option costing twice as much as the other.
Could you elaborate?
Kind Regards
Benjamin Hale

Hi Ben
You are quite correct. You can register through the MSA, I think the
cost is around £600 but certainly in the past that has given you 'student
status' and can be beneficial if you are paying council tax. It also
includes a couple of recall days.
Ours is for monitoring only at a cost of £175 + VAT.
So at the end of the day it's a case of what is most beneficial to you.
Regards
Alison

Competitions
Hey,
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer holiday. I was just wondering how everyone is doing with the job hunt? I'm in the process of applying but haven't had much luck yet. It would be great to get this blog going again with everyone's updates, esp those who have jobs? Also is anyone up for entering some competitions? My cousin's an architect and he said competitions are a great way to keep involved with the architectural world and obv its great for the CV too. Plus he said he would help us out by critiquing any work we do. Lemme know what you think.

For those of you looking for jobs
As we discussed I think it would be a good little idea if we were to keep the blog very active in our placement year. It worked very well at the end of semester 2 and I foresee it offering us an invaluable resource for discussion when we are in practice, travelling, or looking for work. I've already started filling out my detailed diary, this should make things alot easier when it comes to filling out your PDER forms.
If your currently job hunting I friend showed me a website where you can have your work professionally bound, this offers you the chance to stand out from other graduates when going to interviews. Your degree class is only half of it, how you pre3sent yourself and come across is obviously important.

If your heading of travelling drop some photos on the blog. Be nice to see,
all the best.

Tomorrows events
Anybody got any ideas what the plans are for tomorrow? Were we not supposed to get an email from Geoff detailing where we should be pinning up? What are you's guys plans of teh actions?
Draft Synoptic
This is just a draft, just deciding what to put on the page. Ive tried to keep it simple layout wise. What do you think of the order? also is it ok to only put 1 plan? and i haven't included my 1:20 slice at all...what do you think are the most important things to show?

Entrance Foyer Perspective
6.4??
Hey guys, the 6.4 brief is split into two sections, i'm assuming the part 1 special study is for the portfolio and part 2 synoptic is just for the exhibition? is that right? whats everyone doing for the special study? do you think if we do the spatial study, it can be done in quite an abstract way?
South Elevation
Wednesday, 5 May 2010
Hey sweets, cant comment on the blog so here goes a post to you :-) i like your plan but maybe expand on the scope of the context a little more showing textures and buildings/green space but without distracting from the plan so you can play with the transparency...also maybe make the outer layer (between the trees and floor plan) stand out a little more to seperate it from the context lines- maybe some subtle (gradient?) shading or something? also....whats up with your phone missy?? architecture is starting to effect my sight as well as my posture :-(
half finished plan?
I'm half way through tarting up my plans...and this is what I've done so far on one? I'm undecided about how to finish it off, like shall i shade in the context/ add some textures/colour....what do you reckon it needs...? You know when you stare at something long enough you just feel a bit lost after a while!

Jack for some reason i still cant seem to comment :-( which is really bugging me lol. Should be heading down to London tomorrow evening to print my portfolio off (first term, elevations, sections etc) early friday morning and make it in for just after lunch on friday's studio. Printing it professionally there will work out cheaper than uni. I've been having problems printing my sheets in Chatham the past few weeks. The rest will prob print off in Manc on Monday.
I wanted to try and show the contrasting residential and green spaces either side of my site that run along the metaphysical boundary of Rochdale Canal. But was unsure on the opacity as I needed to keep the context underneath. Am also unsure on the colour of my building units. in the process of making them look 'more exciting'. Any suggestions?
PRINTING
The time for printing is looming, what are everyone's plans? I phoned chatham today to see if they were open over the weekend, but they said they weren't which is rather annoying. Do you think leaving it until monday is too much of a risk? Might print as much as possible on friday.

Also for some reason the blog isnt letting me comment on anyones work... it keeps telling me to "choose a profile". have no idea whats up with it. So will do it this way... wisdom Jacko powers i really like your section, i think the contrast of dark and light from top to bottom is really effective and the view of the section with the text script in the background works well. am i right in thinking that the images at the end are a photographic projection...?? Natalie, i really like your plan although maybe the section could use some people to show the scale better and the occupation of the spaces. And Michelle i really like your perspective section and think your plans look amazing. I agree with jack on the transverse section, maybe blend it in with the context more, by playing around with transparency, tone or even shading the internal spaces.
Layout sheets
Here is an example of one of my night/day elevations and an example section. I am a bit unsure on the ground and the sky for the section, or maybe the section in general...? have changed the layout from the previous sheets to make each page more coherent by having one image strip across a page. should i maybe do 2 elevations to a page or keep it as it is? any advice or construction criticism on the pages feel free guys. Cheers. xx
Perspective section
Final Plans
Hi, just posting up an example plan for peoples thoughts, do you think it needs to be bolder? And, I'm struggling with my 1:200 section and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for the interior rendering, I tried doing some shading etc but it just made it all blur into one and wasn't very clear. Cheers xxx
plans and sections
Hey, this is a sample of what my final plans and sections will look like.. just wondering if the plan is clear enough or are some of the lines still too feathery? my facade has silhouette images etched onto them.. not sure if the difference between facade and actual people silhouettes is clear in the section?
